I have a repeat customer that has an older (late 60's early 70's) ludwig kit. The 16" floor is out of round and he is having problems getting and keeping it in tune. Not sure of the ply, but it does have reinforcement rings. I thought about applying some steam to the shell and putting some 'perfect circle' blanks inside and then letting it cool back down. Is this possible without delaminating? The shell seems to be a little more out of round on the batter side than the resonating.

If anybody has any other ideas please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I would try just heat rather than steam.
If the temperature isnt too high it should not delaminate them.

Thanks for the reply!

The more I thought about it, I have a homemade hinged form for making shells. I was wondering if I would be able to put it in the form and slowly close it applying a little pressure on the shell. Every day or two I could close the form/mold a little more and slowly bring it back to shape. I would remove the rings before I did this. When it was back in shape I would put new rings on and re cut edges.

What do you think about this?

Rick

I think since that process (over a rather long time) is how they got out of round, that would be a reasonable re rounding solution. Heat would only be a short cut (but would be more risky)
